one is made in mexico, one is made in japan. The quality is very similar for both factories. They both build the lower end fender models such as squier, etc. The quality control is not as stringent as the american made instruments but still pretty good. I have played Japanese and Mexican strats that played surprisingly well. I have also played some that don’t play well. If you are careful and choosy, you can find some real bargains from either factory.
Note* the mexican factory is only 3 miles over the border. You can see it from the border!
Japanese made is made with more precisions. (Longer lasting, not necessarily the better tone)
But I’d go with MIM Fender Strats on my personal opinion.

I had a mexican strat and it was OK. After like 10 years the pickups started getting really buzzy, but other than that it was fine.
Mexicans ones are way better than the Japanese ones.
It’s the japanese that is the rip off.
