I asked this question before but I got answers about why an mp3 player is cool. I’m not technology illiterate; I know what an mp3 player is. What I want to know is why do people love the iPod so much when there are other mp3 players out there that are comparable?
Some of you are saying that you can use it as an external hard drive and that you can download songs from Limewire onto it. Can’t you do that with other mp3 players too? I’m pretty sure a lot of those features everyone’s been spoutin’ can be found in other players. Hmmm. . . Are there any other good features that non-iPod users don’t know about?
Marketing/brand recognition and ITunes.
iPod is how the mp3 player is known to the mp3 illiterate. ITunes allows people to purchase and transfer music with ease. It eliminates drag/drop or synching with windows media or some other player. Finally it is the “in” product, every other brand is chasing the ipod.
Look up the French word, “cachet”. IMHO, the iPod’s pluses do not cancel its negatives:
1. The iPod has poor battery life and is easily damaged.
2. It requires Apple’s software on the PC; with an MP3 player, music can be easily moved on or off the player through Windows Explorer (W98 or later).
3. Price. Even if an iPod lasts four years, they’re so expensive you could buy and throw away a new 1GB MP3 player per year for the same money and get new features all the time.
4. You can’t use an iPod as a RAM disk for easy data transfer.
5. Apple’s proprietary formats. With legit MP3 files, you can put them on any device you own; with Apple and DRM, you have to buy the same song 2 times, 3 times or more to play it on all your devices. That a flippin’ ripoff.
1. Nothing compares to the sound of an iPod.
2. The battery’s long lasting. The only battery problem with with the first generation iPod.
3. You can play mp4s, mp3s, and videos.
4. It’s light and easy to use.
5. iTunes is great.
6. i can also download free songs on to it from Limewire.
7. you can use it as an external hard drive.

In response to your addendum, the internet is full of sites that compare the iPod to other MP3 players. Just go to google and do a search. All you’re getting is opinions here. I’ve only owned an iPod…I’ve never owned another MP3 player and I’m more than satisfied. Personally, I’ve never done a comparison test and I’m sure many of the iPod haters haven’t as well. Your best bet is to go to these sites and read what the research says. That’s the only way you’ll get an objective answer. I’m guessing that’s what you’re looking for.
YES They are much better, from sound to portability to style to compatibility to spending lots of time at the apple store getting it fixed

ipod is just seen everywhere, even from the begining. apple corrupted our brains and brainwashed the word “mp3″ to be referred as “ipod”. Sony, Creative, Archos, iRiver, Samsung, etc. isn’t known everywhere because it isnt advertised as much as the ipod.
Technically the iPod is no better than any portable device it’s just the most popular and the most overrated. I won’t lie Apple’s iPod is a sleek device that is very compact and probably is easy to most people to use, but that doesn’t make it better than any quality so called “MP3 Players” out there. Apple’s iPod is just basically overrated but a cool device, but there are many more quality MP3s that has more features and memory than the iPod. And Apple also has many celebrity endorsements. You see em in videos and you see them on billboards, bus stops, everywhere.
Not only can an iPod listen to music but watch video as well. Any music videos you have can be put in an iPod (only compatible to a video iPod and others don’t work). A lot of people have iPods because it’s not as complicated as a mp3 player. A mp3 player isn’t bad but, just don’t have as much features as an iPod does.
Don’t let people full you, Ipods are Overrated, and Overpriced
Ipods are not better than all mp3 players just some
