I’ve got a yamaha YPT-300 and the acoustic guitars are actually believable, but the samples for “distorted guitar” and “overdriven guitar” are just crap. It’s really not just the tonal qualities of the sample, it’s the fact that every time you hit the same key you get the same sound. On a guitar, you can play one note over and over and it’ll sound a bit different every time. So do any keyboards actually have the ability to sound like electric guitars? I’ve heard the tyros 2 and i’m only mildly impressed by that. It just baffles me because they can sounds like anything else!

Who says I want to be “soloing” anyway? I’m trying to add convincing guitar sounds, single notes in fact that double with the piano bass line that sounds like guitar. Who wants to solo with anything other than a guitar anyway heheh? Oh yay a sterile sounding fast paced oboe shredding session!

Question by Nick: “Starter Guitar” holding me back?
Okay, so I started playing guitar about a year ago, with a Yamaha starter acoustic and an Epiphone Les Paul Special II, the latter of which I use more often. Recently I feel as though my progress has stalled, and was wondering: just how much does the equipment you’re using matter in terms of playability and ability to advance? Both my acoustic and electric were reviewed as excellent starter guitars, but at what point should I feel the need to upgrade? I don’t have the money right now (student loans come first, I’m afraid) but it would give me some piece of mind to know that it’s not JUST my own ineptitude that’s been plaguing me as I try to become a more proficient player.

I still do work on chords, scales, technique every day– I just feel like I’ve hit a wall and I wanted to know how much of a role equipment can play, since I know when I went from my VERY first guitar (a real piece of garbage) to the Yamaha acoustic, the lower action and higher quality improved my play pretty dramatically.

If yo don’t have the money, what is stopping you to upgrade to better courses or learning more scales, modes, and chords ?

Wouldn’t that be a good idea to UPGRADE your technique ? Eventually, when you really get into good solid practice and learning and listening to lots of music, your ear will tell you what sound appeals to you according to your genre of playing.

edit…You can lower the actions and put on .009 extra light gauge. That will give oyu ease of playing especially when doing arpeggios (guitar sweeps) which demand a low responsive action. Other than that, listen to music and play along with it. Get your mind off of better equipment. I won a competition with a nameless guitar. Just to show you how people can be deceived. I made it sound like a 00 guitar. It’s all in the fingers and how much you love the instrument. Eventually, you will be able to upgrade and the secret to upgrading, is buying a better amp or a better guiatr.
Don;t invest in both. Better to buy a good amp or a good guitar. Then, when you have more money, you will have to upgrade only one item and not two.
Otherwise, its a waste of monty.
