Although learning the basics is vital, you can always search tabs of your favourite songs.
I suggest buying a book. They’re cheap and are much more detailed and easier to use than an online site. Also, anything free usually only teaches you very little, whereas a book (at least, my own) teaches the basics and more advanced things.
As for sites, I don’t know. Sorry!

Youtube, as has been said, there’s this guy Justin Sandercoe and he has a homepage that can be also very helpful, he also has a lot of videos on Youtube.

If you say that you’re a complete beginner then I’d recommend you to start with video lessons, because they also give you a small idea how the actual thing looks like. Theory is good to read, but it can’t tell you how to exactly hold your hand etc. To play metal or any kind of music you have to know the basics, like learn chord patterns, strumming patterns, some techniques, also how to hold the guitar. I don’t know if you have electrical one or classical (electrical I guess hehe), but it’s also very important to learn to hold your guitar correctly because it pays off in every way, keeps your wrists “healthier” etc.

So I’d say start with Justin and if you have learned the basic chords etc then look from Youtube for some songs that you like, just type in video lesson etc and it usually will give you a lot of results. Just one thing – there is a lot of crap on Youtube, so also take a look at the ratings or maybe even comments.

Anyways, good luck, guitar is a wonderful thing and don’t give up when it looks like it isn’t getting any better – it will, believe me. :)

here are a couple of good sites, that can help you out. It’s not a bad Idea to get some lessons to get started out right. Private are best but they can be expensive. Many community colleges have free or very cheap beginners guitar lessons.
    Good luck.

This site has been consistently chosen as the best answer for free guitar lessons. It has videos, and a number of the practice riffs are metal riffs.
